Limitless
Like last
year, the 2021 edition of Mother’s Day is set to be a little different to
usual, with the government’s Covid restrictions again preventing most of the
usual celebrations from taking place. A little history about this monumental
day, most people know the occasion as “Mother’s Day” rather than the
traditional “Mothering Sunday”, which owes much to the American festival later
in the year. It was created in 1907 by Anna Jarvis, who held a memorial for her
mother Ann Jarvis, a peace activist who treated wounded soldiers in the
American Civil War. Her daughter campaigned for a day to honor the role played
by mothers following Ann’s death, and the idea gained such traction that by
1911 all US states observed the holiday. In 1914, it had become so ubiquitous
that President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day a national holiday “as a
public expression of love and reverence for the mothers of our country”.
The Mother’s Day celebrations
means it is the time for the children to express their love and concern towards
their moms. And they do so by giving presents, flowers and other home made
cards and crafts to their mothers. Cherishing the person who gave birth to us
and helped us stand up and become who we are today should be done not only on Mother’s
Day, we should show our love to them every day. I celebrated Mother’s Day
peacefully at home, without any grand surprises, I spent the day with the 3
people I deemed as my mother. My grandmother, my aunt and my mother, they each
took care of me and guided me through life. A mother is a selfless, loving
human who must sacrifice many of their wants and needs for the wants and needs
of their children. A mother works hard to make sure their child is equipped
with the knowledge, skills and abilities to make it as a competent human being.
I saw this with my dog, when she gave birth, she took care of them and guarded
them, she wouldn’t even sleep at night. Motherhood is universal.
Cherish our mothers while they
are still here. Mother’s will love us, whatever we do, With a warm
understanding and infinite patience, And wonderful gentleness, too. Mother’s
day is not only on the 2nd of May, it is everyday.
