Keeping Traditions Alive Amidst the Ongoing Pandemic

Celebrating Vigan’s fiesta amidst the CoVid-19 pandemic shows just how important culture is to us. Understandably because of the ongoing pandemic the festival is not as festive as the previous years. It is commendable that we were still able to celebrate this year.

Culture and tradition are what defines our people, it is what makes us different from other races. These two things are very integral for the next generations, it is what they will remember us by. Traditional celebrations are some of the core angles of any culture. Whether it may be a wedding or a national recognition, our celebrations are woven firmly into our general social identity. When we move abroad, a part of the excitement of living in a new culture is exploring and joining within the celebration of the local holidays and traditions of our adopted country. A few of these encounters will give memories that will last a lifetime. Getting deep into the local culture could be an incredible way to adjust to your new home, but there are various reasons why keeping up our own cultural traditions when we move abroad is fair as critical. Celebrating your traditions is perhaps most imperative in case you have got ex-pat kids growing up in another culture (the so-called 3rd culture kids). It can help them to keep one foot firmly established in their home culture, while also offering learning encounters that might not otherwise happen. Just like me, I am a Chines living in a Foreign country, but we celebrate both Chinese traditions and Philippine traditions.

Spreading your culture when you go to a foreign land, but you also need to not forget your own culture and pass it on to your children so that they may continue the cycle. The celebration in Vigan is an exceptionally good thing, considering that the pandemic has reached Ilocos Sur and has spread to a fair amount of people. We were able to keep our traditions and do it in a safe manner.

  1. I like how you emphasize the importance of traditions and culture and why we should teach it to the next generations. I agree that it is admirable how we can still celebrate despite the pandemic. Let's hope that it will end and we can continue celebrating as usual. Keep safe and have a great day!
