Cherish and Remember

The Philippine Declaration of Independence occurred in Kawit, Cavite on 12 June 1898 where Filipino revolutionary forces under General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippine islands from Spanish colonization after the latter was defeated at the Battle of Manila Bay on 1 May 1898

We celebrate our Independence every year, it was never a big deal for me because I was uninterested about this day, the only positive for me on Independence Day was that we had no school so I could spend the day at home playing my gadgets. But now I learned

of the significance of celebrating this day. The things people had to sacrifice, just for us to enjoy our Independence today is enormous. That freedom they wanted to grasp so much, we take for granted today and every day, it’s as if all the things they had done never happened. We did not experience what they lived through just for us to be free today and that is our problem. When we get stuff for free, we tend to take it for granted and not take care of it properly but when it is our money, our hard-earned money that is used to buy things, we take care of it and cherish it deeply. This is exactly what I mean, we should cherish Independence day even though we were not the ones who fought for Independence. During the Spanish-American War, Filipino rebels led by Emilio Aguinaldo proclaim the independence of the Philippines after 300 years of Spanish rule. We are Free! It is something that should echo the entire Philippines every day, not just during Independence Day. Cherish this day and the freedom we have; it is a priceless gem that we cannot trade.

Wherever you are in the Philippines, everywhere you step, you enjoy the freedom our ancestors fought for. A land that was once colonized and made it’s people slaves is now a free country, that should sink in every day and we should remind ourselves that though we weren’t the ones who fought for freedom, we are the ones who are enjoying it today. We should cherish and take care of this freedom we have.
